Program Description
This program is designed to support the advancement of professional educators into school principals and administrative leaders, specifically those interested in obtaining PreK–12 Principal Certification in the State of Arizona through its alternate route approval. This educational leadership program offers an opportunity for qualified candidates to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities through academic and hands-on practicum experiences in their work environment. The program includes 15 practicum hours per course for a total of 150 practicum hours* that are required for graduation.
The Arizona State Board of Education has approved this program as an Educator Preparation Program leading to educator certification. Upon program completion, AIU will submit its Institutional Recommendation to the Board; it is the candidate’s responsibility to complete the certification process with the state.
AIU's Master of Education (M.Ed.), is programmatically accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).
Program Outcomes

- Implement instructional strategies and technologies to support learning (i.e., eLearning, distance learning, online learning, traditional learning, and hybrid learning).
- Analyze the impact of instructional design methodology and learning theories/sciences (social, emotional, and academic) on stakeholders for effectiveness of interventions and/or educational systems.
- Integrate continuous improvement, learner assessment, technology, eLearning, and evaluation plans based on data analysis.
Specific Program Admission Requirements
In addition to the general graduate admissions requirements, prospective candidates must meet the following requirements in order to be officially admitted to this program.
- Hold a teaching certificate that is current at the time of enrollment,
- Have at least three years of teaching experience,
- Hold current employment with an Arizona PreK-12 educational institution that has signed (or will agree to sign) a practicum partnership agreement with the University, and
- Have identified a supervising practitioner with an Arizona Administrative Certification and a current classification of highly effective or effective pursuant to ARS §§ 15-341(A)(41), 15-189.06.
The candidate may satisfy items 1 and 2 through a jurisdiction other than Arizona, but the practicum must be completed at an Arizona PreK-12 educational institution under the oversight of a supervising practitioner that meets the requirements listed in item 4. It is the responsibility of the candidate to have their location and supervising practitioner identified and approved before starting the program.
Candidates must maintain employment at an institution with an active agreement (item 3) and have an approved supervising practitioner (item 4) for the duration of the program.
Candidates are conditionally admitted pending receipt of all documentation related to the program admissions requirements listed above. Required documentation must be received in order for the candidate to begin classes. Upon receipt and review of these documents, candidates may be officially admitted to the University as a regular student.
