Directed Study
Students at AIU may be allowed to take courses through directed study. Directed study is only for exceptional circumstances. In order to take a directed study course, the student must obtain permission from the Campus Director.
Note: Directed study is not an available option at AIU Online.
The University reserves the right to offer courses in a directed study format. The procedures to follow are:
1. A student seeking permission to enroll in a directed study course should contact their Program Chair to determine eligibility and need. The Program Chair will review with the student any potential academic and financial considerations that may result from taking a directed studies course.
2. If it is agreed that a directed study is warranted, the student will complete the requisition form and obtain the required signature from his/her Program Chair and the Campus Director.
3. Once an instructor is obtained and the request form signed by the Program Chair and the Campus Director, the form is submitted to the University Registrar's Office. One copy of the approved request form is kept in the student’s file.
4. The instructor is required to meet with the student at least once each week during the term. Meetings shall be at the campus, face to face, unless virtual sessions are preapproved. Students studying at AIU on an F-1 visa are required to meet face to face with the instructor each week at the campus.
5. The instructor is responsible for seeing that the student and Program Chair, have a copy of the syllabus.
The student has until the end of the Drop/Add period to drop a directed study class; otherwise the student will be billed for the full amount of the course.
